The finishing work on the interior of the new hospital was completed the latter part of last week.  Seven rooms beside the culinary department have been arranged and the operating equipment is the most complete that can be had.  Just as soon as electrical appliances can be obtained an x-ray machine will be added and we will then have the most up-to-date  institution of this kind in this part of the country. It’s amazing how far we have come along in the medical world since 1915 and it will be equally amazing to see where we go in the future.  Elgin still has our hospital, Jacobson Memorial Hospital, we also have two clinics the Elgin Community Clinic and the Elgin Clinic.  Elgin is also home to the Jacobson Memorial Care Center and Dakota Hill Housing, which is an assisted living center.  However, our medical community doesn’t stop there we also have a dentist, optometrists, chiropractors, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and massage therapy.

The Board plans for the library to include several computers and printers for everyone to use, technology classes, a room for arts and crafts for children and adults, a center for the senior citizens to play card, visit or host events, a special location for children and adults to read and a display of our local artists and historical artifacts.

• Orange Box- The tree has Dutch Elm Disease and needs to be removed.  The bark needs to be removed if you want to use it for any purpose.  If the bark is not removed it needs to be buried, burned or chipped to destroy hiding places for Elm Bark Beetle and the fungus.
• Orange Line- The tree has dead branches or stems that need to be removed. The bark needs to be removed if you want to use it for any purpose.  If the bark is not removed it needs to be buried, burned or chipped to destroy hiding places for Elm Bark Beetle and the fungus.
• Yellow-green Rectangle- The tree is a safety concern and need to be removed.  The wood can be used without removing the bark.
• Yellow-green Line- The tree needs limbs pruned that are dead or damaged over the street, sidewalk, parking area or stucture.

The City has set up a public meeting for Friday, October, 16, 2009, at 7:00 pm at the Elgin Community Center, where the State Community Forestry Specialist will discuss his findings with the community and will be available to answer any questions about tree removal and signs of diseased trees.

Both the Elgin City Council and Elgin Housing Authority are discussing ways to help community members with the removal of these trees.

Those were the headlines in the August 22, 1919 Elgin Times.  At nine o’clock Wednesday morning two important streets in the city of Elgin lay smouldering in ruins.  The fire almost wiped out the city of Elgin.  It started in the second story of the Julius Heil Pool Room at about 3 a.m. and by 9 a.m. ten buildings were razed.

Elgin fire-fighting apparatus was inadequate and little could be done to prevent the spread of flames.  People gathered and two chemical engines were put in use but with little effect.  The bucket brigade did the best it could.  It was not until the fire departments from New Leipzig and Carson were called and Bleick’s traction engine was employed that the fire finally was brought under control.

Those businesses and buildings that were destroyed by the fire were: The Balliet building that housed the Heil Pool Hall and George Neal’s Barbershop; Mrs. Rehndahl’s Restaurant; Dittus Brothers Implement Business; the Post Office building owned by G.H. Freitag; F.G. Boetcher building belonging to the Elgin State Bank; J.S. Mayer’s Tailorshop, owned by Curlew Lumber Co.; J.K Pettis building occupied by Wm. Rivinius, George Monson and A.D. Knight; The Henning’s Restaurant and the Lemke building.

In most cases the contents of the buildings were removed before the fire reached them expect for those owned by Mrs. Rehndahl, Mr. Heil, Mr. Neal, and Dittus Brothers.  The entire loss was estimated at $50,000, but insurance covered only $11,300, leaving a total loss of approximately $38,000.

The fire was a disastrous one and it took many years for the city of Elgin to rebuild.  The origin of the fire is still a mystery.

Saturday is always filled with fun events.  The Heil rummage sale will be going from 8:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m.  At 10:00 a.m. the Grand Parade will start to move down Main Street.   This years Parade Marshals are Rosie Barth and Dr. John and Mary Sanderson.  Other events for Saturday include: Four-Man Golf Scramble, Trycicle Races, Water Balloon Toss, Inflatable Activities, along with others.  At 6:00 p.m. on Saturday the Elgin Saddle Club Rodeo begins at the Rodeo Grounds.   After the Rodeo get your dancing shoes out for another round of dancing on Saturday night  as Nightlife Entertainment will be rocking the Elgin Community Center beginning at 8:30 p.m.

On Sunday the Elgin Saddle Club Rodeo continues at 2:00 p.m. and the Elgin Museum will open at 2:30 p.m. for tours.

A meeting was called and a group of men assembled around noon to decide on a new name.  However this would not be a simple task to complete, with all the men having their own ideas of what the town should be named, it looked as if they would be notifying the U.S. Post Office that they could not agree on a name and that it would continue to be Shanely.  The meeting continued on for many hours and the men started to get hungry,  it would just be a matter of time and desperation before the men would agree on a name.

A man, whose name is unknown,  had been sitting in the back of the room watching the flies buzz around.  He became overcome by his hungry stomach and pulled out his watch to look at the time.  The man noticed, probably for the first time that his watch was a wonderful work of art and craftsmanship.  He took a moment and thought about this reliable watch that he trusted.

All of the sudden, he raised his watch high into the air for all to see and announced, “It’s time to eat!”  As if being struck by a happy after-thought he suggested, “Why don’t we call our town “Elgin?”  For the watch the man was wearing was crafted by the Elgin National Watch Company.

It was agreed upon then and so it is now.
